Gus Hansen experienced a marvelous year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only one to achieve final table in 3 of the competitions. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You might remember one of the biggest pots in big stakes poker recorded history up against Daniel Negreanu. He raked in a huge pot with quads against Negreanu’s full house. Gus has made many televised poker appearances and is thought to be one of the strongest gamblers anywhere in the world. While participating in internet poker, a different side of Hansen has appeared. He frequently participates in the 200/400 NL maximum buy-in of Forty Thousand dollars. Hansen usually buys in for the min of $16, 000 and plays very weak. He sits there waiting for a decent hand and then pushes all-in. I accept that Hansen is an excellent poker player but certainly not even close to the regular players at 200/400NL. Unless he is broke, he has little or no reason to play at the table with the minimum buy-in.
Playing for the min takes a majority of the skill out of deep stack poker. Hansen is supposed to be one of the greatest players anywhere in the world but he cannot buy in for the total amount. I believe television can alter our perception of the real world every now and then. The greatest players anywhere in the world may be guys you have never heard of before. Gus can be found wagering on internet poker on Full Tilt. He commonly competes in big stakes Omaha and Holdem. Gus has proven himself as a tournament player. Can he back up his abilities in money rounds?
