Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he liked betting on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in the above-mentioned card games while playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a bit and headed to New York to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he would play many hours and fail to win most times. He made some extra money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to get more rest and concentrate even more on the game.
The real improvement in his game happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently challenge each other. Howard had access into some of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his logical thinking techniques. He used these strategy ideas in the game of NL texas hold’em.
He also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. He told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker world ever. Howard moved to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the next 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
