Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.
Omaha/8 begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. After all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting happens at which point the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many players can get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same approach in almost all poker games.
A low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
Although it seems complicated at first, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing range of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have several players battling for the high hand, and many battling for the low.
