Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha hi low starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further round of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where some entrants can get flustered. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to utilize precisely three cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical concept in almost every poker game.
The lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.
Although it seems complicated initially, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play easily enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha hi/low provides an overwhelming range of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have many players trying for the high hand, as well as several battling for the low hand. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha hi lo.
