Omaha Hi Low: Fundamental Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of betting follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering follows and then the river card is flipped. The players will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical approach in almost all poker games.

A lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem complex at first, after a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming collection of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have several players battling for the high hand, along with many shooting for the low. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
