Omaha Hi-Lo: General Summary

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another round of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The players will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players can get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same concept in just about every poker game.

The lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.

While it seems complex at the start, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the base nuances of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 provides an amazing assortment of wagering choices and seeing that you have numerous individuals trying for the high hand, and many trying for the low. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
