Gus Hansen enjoyed an amazing year on the WPT where he was the only participant to achieve final poker table in 3 of the competitions. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You might recall one of the biggest pots in big stakes poker history competing against Daniel Negreanu. He raked in a large pot with 4 of a kind against Negreanu’s full house. Gus has made many televised poker appearances and is thought to be one of the strongest bettors around the world. While betting on web poker, a different side of Hansen has emerged. He often plays in the 200/400 NL max buy in of $40, 000. Hansen frequently buys-in for the min of $16, 000 and gambles very weak. He waits for a good hand and then pushes all-in. I know Hansen is an outstanding poker player but certainly not even close to the regular players at 200/400no limit. Unless Gus is bankrupt, he has absolutely no reason to settle at the game with the min buy in.
Buying in for the min takes a majority of the skill out of big stack poker. Hansen is presumed to be one of the best poker players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy in for the full dollar value. I think television can skew our view of the real world every now and then. The greatest players anywhere in the world may be players you have never heard of. Gus can be seen participating in online poker on Full Tilt. He generally participates in big stakes omaha hi-low and Holdem. Gus Hansen has shown himself as a tournament player.
