Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in popularity so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. A further round of betting happens. After all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting follows at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many players can get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical concept in nearly every poker game.
A low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem complicated at the start, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic nuances of the game simply enough. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming array of betting options and seeing that you have numerous players battling for the high hand, and several shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
